Routine:

The teacher will greet the students and ask about the date and weather. The teacher will review the alphabet.

Beginning:

The teacher will ask a student to give an example of what a wild animal is and ask the students to recall previous information learned in class about wild animals. The teacher will ask the students if they know the definition of a wild animal. The teacher will listen to the students’ suggestions and make a contest. The contest will be to look in the dictionary and find the definition to “habitat”. The first student to define the word correctly will get a wild animal sticker. The teacher will ask the student to discuss the definition of habitat in front of the group.

Developmental:

The teacher will introduce the topic of Wild Animals Habitat. The teacher will make guide questions to spark the curiosity of the students.

Guide questions:

1-      If animals have habitats, do humans have habitats?

2-     In what kind of habitat have you seen a domestic animal?

3-     Can wild animals live in the same habitat as humans and domestic animals? Why?

4-     Where are most habitats for Wild Animals?

After having discussed and answered these questions with the group, the teacher will divide the group in to four teams that will explore using the computer, the habitats of a given group of animals.

Group #1 – Elephants, Hippopotamus, and Rhinos =  Woodland Areas

Group #2 – Lions, Leopards, and Tigers =  Grasslands, savannas

Group # 3 – Penguin, Polar Bear, and Snow Leopard =  Polar Region

Group # 4 – Turtles, Bullfrogs and Pythons =  Tropical Rainforest

Using the sites:  www.kidsgowild.com and kids.nationalgeographic.com , the students will find the habitat of these animals and a picture of each habitat provided by the teacher.

The teacher will then ask the students to choose a group representative and find their wild animal habitats on the world map. This way the students can grasp the physical concept of the countries and climates that they will be recreating in their Cardboard box habitat.

The students will then, using their materials, create a wild animal habitat by having their cardboard box as their prop. The students may use grass and dirt to decorate their habitats. The students will draw the animals and paste them onto the habitat box.

Conclusion:

The teacher will ask the students to finish making their habitats and leave them in the classroom to dry. These projects will be used at the end of the Wild Animals unit, where there will be an Animal Fair in the school’s library.
