Title of the unit: Animals through children’s literature
Academic areas to be integrate: language arts, social studies and science
Third grade
Description:
This curriculum unit is based on children’s literature its focus is an animal theme. It has an inclusion approach that motivates students to want to learn about reading through their interest in animals.
The curriculum unit has focused on only three types of animals, which are, forest animals, wild animals and sea animals. With that variety of animals, students can have a wider range of animal information and literary genres. The different literary genres we have chosen to explore with the students are, multicultural animals, big books, poetry, informational books, traditional literature, and modern fantasy.
Through the implementation of our literature-based curricular unit, Animals through Children’s Literature, our primary goals are to accomplish following:
- Develop our students’ critical and creative thinking so that they will be capable of communicating effectively in the English language.
- Supply our students with a comprehensive, challenging, and enriching curriculum that takes into account and molds itself to respond to their social, economic, cultural, and personal backgrounds and needs.
- Provide our students with the English language educational experiences that will enable them to reach their optimum potential, through meaningful and pertinent content.
- Develop and reinforce our students’ moral values and social awareness by exposing them to a varied repertoire of children’s literature in English.
