Informational books "Coral reefs"





Grade: 3rd

Topic:  Informational books/ sea animals

Standards: Standard # 2 Written Communication

 

I. Objectives:

The student will:

1- Relate new information to prior knowledge and experience

2- See and analyze a video about the destruction of coral reefs

3- Write a friendly letter about coral reefs

4- Demonstrate knowledge about coral reefs by correctly completing a puzzle about coral reefs

 

II. Materials:

1- Puzzle of a coral reef

2-  Computer with internet access

3- Video projector

4-  Papers

5- markers

6- envelopes

           

III. Activities:

Routine :  

The teacher will greet the students. The teacher will ask the students about the date and then write it down on the board. The teacher will ask the students about the weather and ask one of them to check it by looking out the window. The students will then sing the “Weather Song”.

 

Beginning:

The teacher will explore her students’ previous knowledge about the coral reefs. She will give each student a piece of a coral reef puzzle.  They will complete it and then make comments about the beautiful coral reef illustration.

Development:

The teacher will present a video about coral reefs. This video shows various pictures of coral reefs and helps make students conscious about the destructions the coral reefs are suffering.  The next link shows this video:

          The teacher will be explaining the movie. And she will stop it when necessary, to ask comprehension questions. Some of the questions she can make are:

-          What do you like more about the video?

-          Can you describe the coral reefs?

-          Which problems are they confronting?

-          What we can do about it?

 

Conclusion:

The students will write a friendly letter about what the corals reefs are. They will also write about the problems there are confronting. Also they should suggest some ideas of what they can do to protect the coral reefs. To do this activity the teacher will provide a blank letter format.
