Traditional Literature Lesson Plan "Forest Animals"



Grade: 3rd

Topic: Children’s Literature - Traditional Literature (Folktale)

Sub-topic: Forest Animals

Content Standard: Literary Appreciation

 

I.  Objectives           

The student will:              

A.   Orally mention the forest animals that appeared in the story.

B.   Correctly match the animal picture with the corresponding flashcard containing the animal’s sound.

C.   Identify and label forest animal’s names and sounds. 

 

II. Materials                         

A.   Book: Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears (Folktale from Western Africa) Adapted By: Verna Aardema

B.   Forest animal pictures

C.   Flashcards with animal sounds written on them

D. Animal Sounds Worksheet (3 pages)

E.   Scissors and glue

 

III. Activities                                   

A. Routine

The teacher will greet the students, ask them today’s date (they will sing the “Months of the Year” song), and have them identify the weather (they will sing “ Today is a ____ day” song).

B. Initial

1. The teacher will present the book Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears to the students and ask them what they think today’s class will be about.

2.   After listening to the students’ answers, the teacher will say: “Well then, let’s find out if your guesses are right!” and ask the students quietly go to the reading area, and sit around the reading chair.

3.   Once all the students are sitting down, the teacher will sit in the reading chair and place the book in front of her. The teacher will ask one of the students to read the book title out loud. Then she will show the book cover to the students once again and ask: “What do you think the book will be about? How can you tell? Why do you think that?” and give each student the opportunity to answer.

4.   The teacher will then hold the book in front of her to show the students the illustrations as she reads the story. As the story progresses the teacher will ask the following guide questions about each of the animals that appear in the story:

a. What type of animal is the _(animal name)_ ?

b. Does anyone know where _(animal name)_ live?

c. What do you call the group of animals who live in that place?

d. What do you think __(animal name)__ eat?

e. What sound does the __(animal name)__ make?

5.   Once the reading of the folktale has finalized, the teacher will ask the students: “Now, can anyone tell me what today’s topic is?” and wait for the students to come up with the correct answer.

6.   The teacher will ask the students to return to their desks in an orderly manner.

 

C. Developmental

Activity #1

1. The teacher will write the topic on the board: Forest Animals.

2.   The teacher will ask the students to tell her what they know about forest animals, and on the board she will write the students answers in the form of a list.

3.   After the students brainstorm/group discussion about forest animals has come to an end, the teacher will explain the forma definition of forest animals.

4.   Then the teacher will show the students “real-life” pictures with the names of the forest animals that appeared in the story. She will show the students each forest animal picture while asking: “Can any of you tell me what sound this animal makes?”, and after a student gives the correct answer, the teacher will write the animal’s name along with the animal’s sound on the board and imitate the sound once and then ask the students to repeat that sound with her.

5.   After presenting all the forest animals presented in the story, the teacher will erase the board and stick flashcards of the animal sound with adhesive tape on one side of the board and the pictures of the animals on the other side of the board.

6.   Then, the teacher will say: “Let’s play the forest animal sound game! How do you want to play? Individually? Half of the group against the other half of the group? Girls against boys?” and then she will draw the scoreboard on the board.

7.   The teacher will explain that the objective of the game is to match the most amounts of forest animal sounds to its corresponding forest animal. The teacher will imitate the sound of one of the forest animals previously discussed in class and the, the first person to match one of the forest animal sounds correctly wins a point for his/her team. The team who scores most points wins.

8.   The teacher will start the match game by calling to random students to the front of the classroom and ask the to stand with their back to the board She will imitate one of the animal sounds and, once she does, the students must turn around and try to be the first one to match the sound with the correct forest animal.

9.   The matching game will continue, and be replayed by rearranging the flashcards and pictures. The game will end once every student has had the chance to participate at least once.

 

Activity #2

1.    The teacher will tell give each student their own copy of the Forest Animals Booklet (see appendix), along with crayons and markers.

2.   The teacher will then explain that each of them will be preparing a booklet about their favorite Forest Animal. She will also tell the students that each of them must draw and write to complete each of the sections in the booklet.

3.   The teacher will give the students 15-20 minutes to complete the task, while walking around the classroom to supervise the students’ work and clarify any doubts they may have.

4.   Once 20 minutes have passed, the teacher will begin to sing the Clean Up song and ask the students to join her and sing as they all help put away the crayons and markers in their corresponding area in the Materials Shelves.

5.   The teacher will ask the students to hand in their booklets, which she will later correct to verify their correctness.

 

D. Final (Homework)

1. The teacher will give each student the Forest Animal Sounds Match homework sheet.

2. Then the teacher will explain the instructions of the worksheet: Each student must write the correct name for each of the forest animals that are included in the worksheet. Then, they must cut out the animal sounds on the last worksheet and paste them next to the correct forest animal. An finally, she will explain that the homework is due for the next day.

3.   The next day the teacher will ask the students to hand in their completed worksheets and then she will discuss the worksheet with the whole group.
